This month’s issue of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is many things. Breathtaking in both story and development, heartbreaking in that both characters and creators are leaving, and tear-jerking in that it made me cry like a baby. Warning: Spoilers below. I realize that I haven’t done a comic review in a while; I have still been reading them monthly but never felt the need to write about what was happening or my thoughts and feelings on them. They have, for the most part, stayed the same. Batman is still Batmaning, Wonder Woman is stilling defying the gods, etc. But this comic kicked me in the heart hard enough that I felt I had to write about it because I needed to. THAT is the sign, not only of a wonderful comic, but a fine piece of art. What’s sad is that I haven’t written about UCSM since I did the review of Issues #1-4. I never lost interest in the comic so I will give you a quick run down of all that happened: Miles became Spider-Man with the approval of Nick Fury, Aunt May, Gwen Stacy, Captain America and the disapproval of Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew). He faced some bad guys, [...]

GDC 2013 was . . . . amazing. Inspiring. Eye-opening. Fun. Awesome. Life-changing. Did I already say amazing? There are a couple of things about the Game Developers Conference of 2013 I’d like to go over! The IGDA Party and Brenda Romero’s Resignation Brenda Romero is was the co-chair of the Women in Games Special Interest Group (SIG) for the Independent Game Developers Association (IGDA). The IGDA partnered with YetiZen to throw a party (I was invited, I did not attend. A boy needs to sleep after all!) and during the party scantily-clad female dancers were used to entertain the guests. Now, this is a problem because women in the video game industry are already faced with sexism. And when women choose to speak out about the sexism they see both in video games AND in the industry they are threatened. Like, seriously, it’s bad. Anna Sarkeesian, who used a successful Kickstarter campaign to fun her FeministFrequency, recieved death threats, threats of being beaten, and was even threatened to be raped. No, no, boys. When a women points out sexism and you don’t like it so you threaten to rape her . . . that is PART of the sexism [...]

Well, I guess I’ll hand it to DC that they support their employees. No, actually I won’t had that to them. Because discrimination is wrong in any form and DC should be ashamed. DC told The Advocate, in response to the backlash of hiring author Orson Scott Card to pen the first issue of new Superman title, Adventures of Superman, “As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.” And, of course, it seemingly absolved them of their hypocrisy. After all, they promote LGBT characters (Batwoman is getting married, Bunker is gayer than ever, and Apollo and Midnighter were featured in a Valentines Day special) so it’s okay that the man behind the first issue of a new Superman title is a member of the National Organization for Marriage, an organization that supported the highly “controversial” (it’s not controversial; it’s plain wrong) “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda. But we’ve come into an area that is under much debate right now: should the personal opinions of an employee matter to an employer? No. But the actions of [...]

Many geeks the world over are fans of Orson Scott Card. The writer behind Ender’s Game(soon to be a major motion boycott) and the soon-to-be-but-hopefully-not story director behind DC’s new digital comic featuring Superman. However, the question we must ask ourselves is: Can gay geeks be fans of Mr. Card? Or should we boycott the blatantly homophobic author? Personally, I have no love for Mr. Card and I have refused, even at the behest of some of my closest friends, to read his works. No matter how great they may be I can’t see him apart from his beliefs. Oh! I forgot to mention his beliefs, well, in a nutshell: He thinks that marriage equality will be the downfall of civilization and he is on the board of National Organization of Marriage (a anti-gay group bent on keeping us from tainting their holy unions). He’s extremely outspoken about his beliefs and I think he’s an asshole. That wasn’t very professional of me, was it? But this kind of thing cuts to the personal. As it should with you as well. Last week another gay teen committed suicide, he was 15 years old and he hung himself on his school playground. [...]

Supergirl has not been having a great time since she first came to Earth but she may start getting some answers to all those questions that have been nagging her! Who shot her father? Why was she sent to Earth? Is Superman really her cousin? How many stars does this comic get? The answer to the last question is three! The plot to this comic is fairly light and fluffy, it’s just an appetizer for what will happen in Issues #0 and #13 and beyond, I’m guessing. Kara and Superman have been talking about the destruction of Krypton, where she came from, her pod, etc. We find out that Kara has been orbiting the sun for five years in stasis absorbing all kinds of solar radiation that made her even more powerful than Superman. It’s thought, by Superman, that someone had orchestrated this to give Kara her powers. We also learn that two pieces of her pod fell to Earth; one was recovered by Simon Tycho and the other is at the bottom of the ocean. After another little family spat (Will the last two Kryptonians EVER get along?!) Kara dives to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve her [...]

How much am I loving this series? A-whole-fucking-lot! And Issue #12 of Azzarello’s Wonder Woman has everything: a child, creepy twins that give me an incest-vibe, and a Super Saiyan! This issue is getting four stars! We left our beloved Princess of Themyscira finally facing Hera, Apollo, Artemis, and Strife in the battle for Zeus’ throne. And, like any Olympian family get-together, there was betrayal, conniving, scheming, and wheels-within-wheels of deals to be made. Wonder Woman takes on Artemis again while Hera throws Zola off a cliff. While diving off Mount Olympus to rescue Zola, Hermes sticks Diana with one of his feathers. This comic, it seems, is where Wonder Woman got her ability to fly. Interestingly enough I had never really noticed that she didn’t do it in the first 11 issues despite being able to fly since her introduction into Justice League. I’d rather not get caught up in what may be a continuity error has DC has already made several despite the entire point of the New 52 being to erase errors and give DC a fresh start. The point is Wonder Woman can now fly and she’s super awesome. Hera has been planning on letting Apollo having the [...]

Five stars! Five. Five of them. To this issue of Batman. Why? Read after the jump to find out! Why is this such an awesome title? Why is this issue in particular getting such a great score? Because I’m gay, damn it. And it’s nice to see a superhero stop a gay-bashing. Granted the interrupted gay-bashing wasn’t the focal point of this issue but the rest of it still spoke volumes to me and it offered a very, very different look into Gotham City and Batman than we had ever seen in this title. We meet Harper Row for the second time. The first was in Batman #7 where she shocked Batman back to life with jumper cables and a car battery. It turns out her and the Batman have more history together. Harper was invited to attend Bruce Wayne’s fancy-schmancy party where he announced his plans on building several new skyscrapers throughout Gotham. After returning home and stealing every baked good she could fit in her back pack she comes across her brother, Cullen, has been gay-bashed by several thugs he knows from school. Harper shaves “FAG” into the back of her hair, as the assailants did to Cullen, [...]

I should have dropped this comic a while ago, really. But how do you drop Superman? He’s the first superhero, you know? Regardless, I eventually found my wits and took this off of my pull-list. I was less than impressed with what was supposed to be a DC flagship title. I’m giving this book one star. The hard part about this review is trying to explain what it is about this comic that completely turned me off. There was not one big flaw that made me hate it but rather a lot of little ones. Little things that I take for granted in other comics were missing from this title and it’s a shame. Action Comics was supposed to be a flagship title, this is the comic that gave birth to Superman! Perhaps it was entirely my fault? I loved Morrison’s run on JLA when I was younger, maybe I grew up too much to enjoy what he’s done with the character? Was there too much change for me to recognize Superman? Was it too different from what I knew? Was the art super-duper-ugly? (Yes. Yes, it was) This Superman isn’t the boyscout we’ve grown to love over the years.
Gaymer.org’s owner, Chris Vizzini, sent a cease and desist letter to the subreddit, /r/gaymers last night stating that the subreddit must not use the name “gaymer.” This does not come as a surprise because their trademark is on the verge of being incontestable. The law states that within 5 years of filing a trademark, the trademark is still contestable and can be held invalid if they fail to enforce their trademark or if they have failed to prove the two core components of a trademark. On April 23, 2007, at the US Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”), Chris Vizzini filed for a trademark in the word “gaymer” (USPTO serial # 77162857 and Registration # 3400949) http://www.trademarkia.com/gaymer-77162857.html, which was subsequently granted on March 25, 2008. Simply stated, this trademark registered gaymer.org’s proprietary rights in being the only online social group to be able to use “gaymer” when referring to an online social group, website, or domain relating to games. March 25, 2013 is around the corner and they have to make sure they can keep the trademark. Gaymer.org is claiming /r/gaymers violating the trademark by “[engaging] in social networking” and “hosting and maintaining an online website for others to discuss, receive [...]

Late yesterday night, r/gaymers, the gay gaming community on Reddit with over 16,500 subscribers, received news that their beloved community may be shut down. The r/gaymers moderators were informed that Reddit had received a cease and desist from the owner of Gaymer.org, Chris Vizzini. Here is the quote of the announcement that was submitted by one of the moderators of the subreddit, MrGhost Ladies and gentlemen, this is incredibly important, and quite frankly too important for a TLDR, so please read. Someone wants to take gaymers from us. A cease and desist letter has been sent to Reddit. It would seem that the owner of gaymer.org is an incredible douchenozzle and has decided that we somehow are infringing upon his right to run a very subpar blog. Though Gaymercon seems to be A-OK. It seems pretty fucked up that they seem to be ok using the same GAYMER name, even though we aren’t making money. See what it is, is that this motherfucker from gaymer.org is sending reddit a cease and desist letter that we are using a name that he had trademarked in 2007 though whoever gave him that trademark is clearly not the brightest lightbulb in the box.
